Donor of the Month

BJ Weidinger:

Donor of the Month

May 2008

BJ Weidinger has been recognized as Houchin’s Donor of the month for her strong commitment to our automated platelet collection.  She is an Occupational Health Nurse for Flying J Refinery and an outstanding advocate and chairperson for their on-site mobile blood drives.

Why does BJ donate?  “The main reason is that shortly after I became a donor, my brother Richard was diagnosed with a platelet disorder and required an excessive amount of platelets and other blood products.  I made a commitment to myself to replace all the platelets that he had required over the years.  Richard passed away in 2005 and shortly thereafter his twin (and my other brother) Ronald was diagnosed with cancer.  He also required multiple blood products including platelets which furthered my commitment to continue donating.  My brother Ron lost his battle last September on his 44th birthday (the twin’s birthday)."

Was there a significant event that encouraged you to become a donor?  “I always wanted to be a donor, but it wasn’t until the regulations changed regarding jaundice that I was able to start donating whole blood in 2000.  I am motivated by a personal commitment and drive for my community.  There are not too many things you can do to save someone’s life, but this is something you can do.  I enjoy my Houchin family and they make the experience so enjoyable.  Some women enjoy getting their nails done for girl talk and relaxation…I enjoy my time donating and visiting with all my friends (staff/volunteers/other donors) at Houchin.”

Why should community members become donors? “Because it’s a life saving event but such an easy thing to do. It is gratifying to know that you can change someone’s life and you never know when you or someone you love will be affected. An hour of my time may possibly save somebody’s life.  What a small effort for such a big reward!”

Donation Achievements:  BJ has donated to date 225 units of platelets and 3 units of whole blood.

More about BJ:   BJ is a resident of Bakersfield and is married to her husband Steve.  She has one step son and two grandchildren, Angelique and Aaron.  BJ enjoys fishing, cooking, gardening, reading mystery novels, volunteer activities and shopping!  She likes to watch old movies and the cooking channel.  Her favorite foods are fresh fruits and vegetables from her garden, any type of berry and Dewar’s peppermint ice cream.
Houchin is thankful for BJ Weidinger’s commitment to Houchin Blood Bank!

Houchin Blood Bank is proud to feature BJ as May’s donor of the month.
